How To: Clear a Creativity Blockage

Creativity. It’s one of the things that elevates the human experience; the ability to create in so many different forms and to express ourselves in unique ways.

As a creative person, I rely on the ‘muse’ being there when I need it. Except for the last couple of weeks it hasn’t been there in quite the way I would like it to be. I’ve had the odd creative spurt however for the most part – and especially when it comes to writing – I have been drawing a blank. It happens and unfortunately no amount of mental pushing and prodding will activate the creative spark until it’s ready to reactivate itself.

So, what to do when the creative flame is dim? Here are a few things that have helped me through – I’d love to hear your ideas.

  1. Be patient – for some of us the frustration can kick in, so it’s important to breath and let it go
  2. Make notes on any ideas you do have – sometimes I find I have ideas kicking around however they’re scattered and I am blocked when it comes to turning them into a tangible creative outcome, so I note down as much as I can and commit to returning to it later… sure, it means I have quite a few lists of things that I want to work on however that’s great because when I’m in the right headspace to create I will have a list of ideas to get stuck into!
  3. Do something else that clears a space in your life – I spent a couple of hours clearing out all of my old clothes and then emptying out things from my spare room that I didn’t need anymore; not an instant cure, granted, however it refocuses me and makes me feel lighter immediately so that’s a great start
  4. Listen to music – each to their own on this, however I’ve been finding lately that listening to classical music calms my mind and helps me to focus more, so find what works for you and get your groove on
  5. Change your environment – I work from home so, aside from on-site meetings with clients and the odd trip to the supermarket, I am in the same environment for almost 24 hours a day, 7 days a week… and sometimes it makes me want to climb the walls! So when I’m heading towards breaking point, I grab my laptop and head to a local cafe to have a couple of coffees and do some work for an hour or two. Caffeine + Creativity = Good Times.

So what works for you? Share your thoughts in the comments section – and thanks for your patience with me during my recent bout of Creativity Blockitis!
